Give to the Rotary "Katrina Relief Fund" (DAF-TRF)
My Fellow Rotarians and My Amigos:
All of us have been shocked by the Hurricane Katrina disaster that affected the Gulf Coast area of the United States. The images are heartbreaking and the extent of the devastation is unbelievable . . . yet we must believe it because we see it every time we read a newspaper or turn on a television set. Each of us, in our own way, wants to do something to help those who have lost everything.
Rotary Zones 29 & 30 comprise 24 Rotary districts in 12 southern and Midwestern U.S. states. These zones include all of the areas which have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina. To assist in the relief effort, the Zones have established the "Katrina Relief Fund", a donor advised fund (DAF) with The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. This fund will serve to help streamline the flow of contributions from Rotarians and others looking to assist victims of the hurricane disaster.
A committee identified by the leadership in the two zones will work with local Rotary clubs and districts, as well as emergency relief agencies to meet the most pressing needs of people in the affected areas.
Directors of the fund are RI Director Robert A Stuart Jr.; Immediate Past RI Vice President John Germ; Duane Sterling, a past general manager of the Foundation; Donald Collette, a past Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator, and Kenneth Schuppert, a Major Gift Advisor for the Foundation. Together, the directors bring outstanding experience and qualifications related to their responsibilities as custodians of the relief fund, including law, engineering, electrical power systems, management of disaster programs, and fund supervision.
The fastest way to contribute to the "Katrina Relief Fund (DAF-TRF)" is to donate online using your credit card. The company which is processing these transactions will accept all international credit cards which will automatically convert your contribution into US$ which is the only currency form the fund can receive. I encourage you to help those who have been affected by this disaster by contributing today to The Rotary Foundation Katrina Relief Fund (DAF- TRF).
Rotarians throughout Zones 29 and 30 and all of North America have organized and come forward to provide disaster relief including food, clothing, water and shelter. They are helping to relocate refugees and to get children registered in school. They are working around the clock. They need your help in providing supplies and services but most of all they need your financial contribution today. The Katrina Relief Fund will send your contributions directly to organizations that Rotary is working with to provide support to the biggest relief effort in the history of the United States. I encourage you to forward this message to other Rotarians so we can reach as many of our members as possible. We need everyone's support in this endeavor.
For more information on relief efforts and other ways to help, please visit RI's World Community Service Disaster Relief page and check the RI home page frequently for updates. For complete information on Donor Advised Funds please visit the Rotary web site.
On behalf of The Rotary Foundation and the Board of Trustees, I thank you for your generosity and for the help that your contribution will provide for the nearly 1 million people who have been left destitute and homeless by this disaster.
Through your contribution, you will be "Lending a Hand" and demonstrating Rotary's motto of "Service Above Self" as you extend the spirit of the "Family of Rotary" to all who's lives have been disrupted by this horrific disaster. For this I thank you.
Yours in Service Above Self,
Frank J. Devlyn - Chairman
The Rotary Foundation Trustees

ROTARY TIDBIT OF THE WEEK
Friendship Exchange: An Opportunity Waiting To Happen
Would you and your family like to visit another Rotarian family in another country, staying in their home for a week or so? Would your Rotary club, alone or in conjunction with other clubs, like to send a team of members (and spouses could be included) to a district in another country and host that district¡¦s team when they visit here?
The Rotary Friendship Exchange program can make that happen!
The Rotary Friendship Exchange program gives Rotarians and their families the opportunity to experience other cultures firsthand, by participating in reciprocal visits with Rotarians from other countries and their families. It is somewhat like Group Study Exchange, but differs in the types of exchanges and the fact that only Rotarians and their families are involved, and the length of visits are usually much shorter.
There are two types of Friendship Exchanges, the Visitor Exchange and the Team Exchange. The number of people or couples participating and the length of stays are flexible in either exchange. Both are determined by the participating districts. If we send a team to another district, they will at some time send a team to our district.
The Visitor Exchange gives individual Rotarians, who may be accompanied by family members, the opportunity to spend about three to seven days in the home of a Rotarian in another country.
The Team Exchange provides the opportunity for several Rotarians or Rotary couples to travel to different communities in a host district for a period of up to one month. Our district plans are to have shorter visits for about a week, but longer visits could be arranged. Teams may consist of Rotarians and spouses from one club or more than one club.
Rotary Friendship Exchange is funded by participants and clubs, and exchanges are carried out at no expense to Rotary International.
Friendship Exchanges for our district are set up through our District Chair, Newell Krogmann of the Le Sueur Rotary Club, who invites you to contact him at 507/665-2587 (office) or 507/665-3198 (home) or krogmann@earthlink.net . He can arrange for someone to come to your club to present a short program about Friendship Exchange.
If this is a speaker you are interested in, contact Jen.
